Why is our packaged food so boring to look at?
Once upon a time, when we bought our fruit and veg almost exclusively from the greengrocer, our raw food was less uniform in shape and colour, and it did occasionally give us a giggle when an odd shape, or strange coloration turned up.
With the inexorable rise of the supermarket, of course, 'standardisation' has become the norm, in shape, size and colour. Items also have to fit into a standardised package (not a brown paper bag), which also imposes limits on deviations from the supermarket wholesale buyers' standards.
Would it be better if we, as consumers, were prepared to accept muckier veg, fruit of non-standard shapes or sizes, recyclable paper bags instead of the now-ubiquitous polystyrene shaped box and polythene plastic cover?
Would it be greener? Would it be cheaper?
Would it make shopping more fun?
