EC backs away from ugly fruit and veg

VegetateThe BBC reports that the EC, in their great wisdom, have dropped a number of rules that forced up to 20 percent of certain crops to be thrown away, because they didn't conform to EC food beauty standards.

As far as I'm concerned, this sort of rubbish legislation belongs in the same skip as 'straight bananas only' and 'you can't call that a sausage' ploys that they have (allegedly) attempted in the past. If the buyer won't buy it, then maybe it can be thrown, or at least reduced in price until a buyer finds it acceptable - but just dumping perfectly (well, perhaps 'imperfectly' would be better) good food because of the way it looks is ridiculous. I think back to being told, as a child, 'You know there are children starving in Africa who would love to have what you're eating'. Well perhaps they wouldn't actually enjoy our style of food, but the point is taken. See the whole story here
