EC backs away from ugly fruit and veg

VegetateThe BBC reports that the EC, in their great wisdom, have dropped a number of rules that forced up to 20 percent of certain crops to be thrown away, because they didn't conform to EC food beauty standards.

What's an Osage Orange?

This isn't strictly a vegetable or a fruit - though I suppose it is the fruit of a tree.

The land of the swede

Vegetate

We are soon off for a short break in the land that first gave us the swede - Sweden, suprisingly enough. Made me think of a couple of things related to this vegetable (and in its various other guises such as rutabaga, neeps or turnips).

The Truth?

Vegetate

Wasn't it in Terry Pratchett's 'The Truth', that the ill-fated newspaper proprietor started (albeit accidentally) a section on 'amusing vegetables' or somesuch?

I have to admit to owning and having read (more than once) virtually all of Pratchett's Discworld books. The last time, I read them all in sequence - except for the couple I'm missing - and it was fun.

I've even read some of those supposedly written for children, like the Dark Side of the Sun and Truckers. I have to admit they were still enjoyable, despite the slightly simpler language. One thing Pratchett never seems to do is talk down to his readers, whatever their age.

There are those who decry the books as being juvenile, or at best, not very funny, but I'll keep reading them, and wait eagerly for the next paperback. Can't afford the hardback editions any more!
